Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring

For Rolling:

  • ½ cup powdered sugar

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.

Prepare the Dry Ingredients

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

Mix the Wet Ingredients

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Mix in the vanilla extract and red food coloring until evenly combined.

Combine the Mixtures

  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined.
  • The dough will be soft and slightly sticky.

Chill the Dough

  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This helps make the dough easier to handle and prevents excessive spreading.

Shape and Coat

  • Scoop chilled dough into 1-inch balls.
  • Roll each ball generously in powdered sugar, coating completely.
  • Place on the prepared baking sheets, leaving 2 inches of space between them.

Bake

  • Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the cookies are set but still soft in the center.
  • They should have a distinctive crackled top.

Cool and Serve

  • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
